2020 Monthly Challenge 4 – Start a New Side Hustle

Welcome to the Fiery Ugandan monthly challenges!

Over time as I’ve indulged in reading blogs, I’ve come to enjoy the monthly challenges done by my favourites and I see them as a way to get to know them better. Even the anonymous ones.

I decided to do my own here as I start out and use it as a way to give my readers a little more insight into my life, while keeping it relevant. This is my chance to try out something that I would not usually have done, at least not consciously, and I expect my documentation to be as seriously carefree as the experience will prove to be.

Each monthly challenge usually involves me denying myself something, in the hopes that it will save me some extra monetary expenses in that month.

The challenge of course is completely free to join, and I’ll be sharing frequently on twitter about my daily progress. You’re invited to complete the challenge with me or whenever you land upon this post, and comment below or tweet me (@fieryugandan) about your thoughts and how it’s going for me. Tag your challenge-related posts with #FUMoneyChallenge for me to find you and cheer you on.

This month’s challenge is for me to start a new side hustle business. Big, innit? It’s also the first monthly challenge for 2020 and since starting a successful new business is one of my 2020 financial goals, I figured now is as good a time as any to start.

I’ve had experience starting a few online business since uni so I’m not exactly going in blind and I have definitely learned from past mistakes. Consequently, it hasn’t been too hard to set up the structures to do the things that need to be done. But as with every new endeavour, there’s always more to learn. I’d already talked about this idea with a few of my friends and family who are into business to get some advice and my plan is to hit the ground running from the start.

The business will run as an informal online shop to test out the waters and keep start up costs low. Initial products will be available for purchase from January 1st on instagram and facebook, and I plan to have advertisements running on social media to reach my first clients. January will be the month for awareness and customer research and hopefully this will kick off to a business that will last for the entire year and break even too.

Have you thought of starting a business? Probably, right? What’s holding you back? Finding the capital to buy my initial stock has been my biggest hindrance but I decided to suck it up and cough it out from my salary. Think on the solutions that you could use to take on your hurdles and see if you can try out your entrepreneurship muscle sometime this year. I’ll definitely try to document some of my progress for the month on twitter.
